Upgrade in Progress
by Jonathan Crowe | Sunday, May 14, 2006
I’m changing over the entire site; I’ll be using Textpattern to manage all the content, rather than a mix of Blogger-powered blogs and homespun PHP scripts. During this process the site will be in a little bit of a shambles. I have no idea how long it will take.
Ontario Herp Laws has a new design and a couple more cities listed. Still a long way to go before there is a reasonable coverage of all the municipalities in the province, though; submissions always welcome.
Another Annual Update
by Jonathan Crowe | Thursday, April 21, 2005
I seem to be updating this page only once a year. This time it was predicated by my hosting provider disabling a PHP function that powered the news feed on this page and the sudden disappearance of the Ontario Turtle and Tortoise Society and Herp Journal sections from this site. Stewart must have pulled them; I’ve e-mailed him to ask what’s up but have heard no reply. So I had a reason to refresh this front page: removing broken functions and dead links. That’s now done, and I’ve simplified the design as well.
I may take the initiative and start up a successor to Herp Journal, if there’s interest in such a project. Let me know if you’re interested. I’ve also been meaning—for some time—to have a guide to Ontario’s species on this site; it hasn’t come to fruition because I’m busy with a zillion other things—contact me if you’d like to lend a hand on that one. I’m also interested in hosting other non-profit herping pages.
The remaining pages—the Pelee Island and herp laws pages—could stand a refresh too.
Finally, off-site but related, I just finished the redesign of the Sciensational Sssnakes!! site, adding a blog, a FAQ, and a lot of new photos and other content. Check it out, why don’t you, while you’re waiting for me to get around to this site again.
The Pelee Island Field Trips site is finally up on Ontario Herpers. It had previously dwelt on my projects domain, mcwetboy.net, and I’d been meaning to bring it over here for the past year or so. Typically of me, it’s taken until now to get it done. Just getting back from the island last weekend was a bit of a motivator, fortunately. With any luck, content will continue to be added: it now covers all of our field trips, not just the one in May 2002. Enjoy!
More Updates Soon
by Jonathan Crowe | Saturday, March 20, 2004
After a long hiatus, as I was too busily involved in other things—you know, like work—changes are afoot over here. I’ve been making some minor fixes here and there so far, and, if all goes well, there will be some new material here as well.
The Ontario Herp News Feed, found at the top right corner of this page, links to news stories found on the web that are about herps or herpers in, around, or of interest to herpers in Ontario.
Update: This has since been discontinued.
Herp Journal
by Jonathan Crowe | Wednesday, May 28, 2003
Stewart Stick started Herp Journal, a weblog about observing reptiles and amphibians in the field, a year ago—more precisely, on May 25, 2002. Along the line, he invited some friends to join him. After a year on BlogSpot, we’ve brought it to ontarioherpers.org and given it a new design. We’ve also started a mailing list for Herp Journal contributors, so that they can talk about administrative and technical matters, or just kibbitz, all secret-like.
Update: This has since been discontinued.
Ontario Herp Laws
by Jonathan Crowe | Wednesday, May 28, 2003
The Summary of Laws in Ontario Relating to Herpetoculture is an online database of provincial laws and municipal by-laws that affect reptile and amphibian keeping in Ontario. It’s quite incomplete at the moment; it needs visitor contributions to make it useful. If you know what the by-laws are in your neck of the woods, visit the page and tell us what you know.
Welcome to Ontario Herpers; ontarioherpers.org has been registered in order to provide a central host for web pages and mailing lists about non-profit, educational, or field-related amateur herpetology in Ontario. If you have a web project or mailing list that you would like to have hosted on ontarioherpers.org, please contact me.
