Since 2001, crazy herpers from Ontario, Quebec and Michigan have descended on Pelee Island every Victoria Day weekend to visit the Wilds of Pelee Island Outdoor Centre for Conservation. During our visits, we have helped restore habitat, build hibernation and nesting sites for endangered reptiles and amphibians, and conduct wildlife surveys. All while hoping for a glimpse of the elusive and endangered Blue Racer. This web site has been set up to host or link to the photos, videos and writings of the participants of those trips.

The Pelee Island field trips are organized by Sciensational Sssnakes!! Contact them if you're interested in partictipating in a future trip.

More of My Photos

Blue Racer As promised, the rest of my photos from this year are up, beginning here. Six photos of a Blue Racer we found followed by two shots of us dying from heat exhaustion as we cut, bundled, and carried out Phragmites — reeds to the rest of you — for building a thatched roof. Now it's just a matter of harassing everyone else for their photos!

Miscellaneous Pelee Posts

A few posts about the 2004 trip from here and there around the web: a thread on ssnakess.com started by Crystal; a post on Herp Journal by Dan; and an overlong post by me on our car getting defaced while we were on the island.

Jordan's Photos from 2003

Jordan with a racer I suddenly realized that I have had Jordan's photos from the 2003 trip sitting in a folder on my hard drive for the past year. So here you go. (I perpetrated the captions, so don't go blaming him for them.)

My Photos from 2004

Blanding's Turtle closeup Okay. I took too many Blue Racer photos and I'm having a hard time figuring out which ones to use. In the meantime, though, I'll put up the pictures that I know I want to use up to that point. So here's my (partial) gallery for this year: 14 photos, a mixture of herps and people misbehaving themselves. I'll complete the gallery later with photos of our encounters with Coluber and Phragmites.

My Photos from 2001

The first new thing for the site is actually something quite old: my photos from the 2001 Victoria Day weekend trip. They're not quite as good due to the limitations of the camera I had at the time. But for the moment they're the only ones available from that year's trip.

Welcome to the New Site

Welcome! As you may have noticed, this site has a slightly different name (Pelee Island Field Trips), a new focus (all our trips, not just the one in 2002), and, most importantly, a new URL: www.ontarioherpers.org/pelee. Links to the old site should be forwarded here, if I did my coding right.

We just got back from our latest trip a few days ago, so there should be some new content on its way shortly. I'll also be harassing some participants of past trips to get older material uploaded as well.

There will be a few bugs to work out still, particularly in terms of broken links in the older entries on the weblog. I'll be updating the links in due course. Bear in mind that there are some posts on the main page that are nearly two years old.

May 2003 Trip Photos and Reports

Photos and journals from the 2003 trip are starting to appear online. After a bit of rejigging of this site, they'll be integrated here, but in the meantime here are some photos from Crystal and Jamie, including some Blue Racer shots, and another thread that includes BJ's trip journal, other observations (including Dan making a funny at everyone else's expense) and additional photos.

Jennifer's Photos

Don't for a moment think that new stuff isn't being added. Jennifer's photos have now been developed, scanned, fiddled with, and posted to the site.

Species Descriptions and Trip Reports

New Species Descriptions and Trip Reports sections. Each species description page will eventually have some text and additional material, but for right now the pages have links to photos of the herps in question in our photo galleries. A new trip report I wrote for The OHS News is now online; it's basically an expansion of the report I wrote for my weblog and for the OARA newsletter.

The participants list has its own page now, and is more detailed.

More structural changes to come, particularly to the front page and overall navigation of the site.

Structural Revisions

Some structural revisions to the site going on right now. Expect things to break occasionally.
